U Sports History
U SPORTS is the national association for university sports in Canada. Every year, over 20,000 student-athletes and 900 coaches from 56 universities vie for 21 national championships in 12 different sports. The original Canadian Interuniversity Athletic Union (CIAU) Central was founded in 1906 and existed until 1955, composed only of universities from Ontario and Quebec. The Canadian Intercollegiate Athletic Union (CIAU) was founded in 1961 In 1978, the governing body of the league changed its name to the Canadian Interuniversity Athletics Union. The body's name was changed in 2001 to Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS), and most recently in 2016, to the current U Sports.U Sports Mens University Conferences

U Sports Mens Basketball Championship
The U Sports Basketball Championship is a single-elimination tournament held each spring. The Final Eight is held over a weekend at a host site to determione the national champion. The championship started in 1963.
