1939 NIT Basketball Tournament

The 1939 National Invitation Tournament held at Madison Square Garden was the 2nd edition of the annual NCAA basketball competition. It consisted of six (6) teams in a single game elimination format. It was was won by Long Island defeating Loyola?Chicago 44 to 32 in the championship game. Bill Lloyd (St. John's) was named the tournament MVP. The head coach was Clair Bee, and the Long Island Blackbirds finished the season with a 23?0 record, retroactively named the national champion by the Helms Athletic Foundation and the Premo-Porretta Power Poll.
