1949 NIT Basketball Tournament

The 1949 National Invitation Tournament was held at Madison Square Garden, New York City. The number of teams was increased to 12 and an additional round of games were added. The tournament was still a single game elimination format. In the championship game the San Francisco Dons coached by Pete Newell, defeated the Loyola-Chicago Ramblers to claim their first NIT title. Don Lofgran of San Francisco was named he tournament MVP.
