1989 NIT Basketball Tournament

The 1989 NIT Tournament remained at a 32 team field. The preliminary rounds consisting of four regions with eight teams each playing at a teams home site. The four finalists from the regions met at Madison Square Gardeens to determine a champion. The St. John's Redmen coached by Lou Carnesecca won their fifth NIT title defeating the Saint Louis Billikens in the championship game. Jayson Williams of St. John's was named the tournament MVP.
