1983 NIT Basketball Tournament

The 1983 NIT Tournament remained at a 32 team field. The preliminary rounds consisting of four regions with eight teams each playing at a teams home site. The four finalists from the regions met at Madison Square Gardeens to determine a champion. The Fresno State Bulldogs coached by Boyd Grant defeated the DePaul Blue Demons in the championship game to claim their first NIT title. The tournament MVP was Ron Anderson from Fresno State.
