2002 NIT Basketball Tournament

The 2002 NIT Tournament expanded to a 40 team field. The opening round pitted four teams in each region palaying for two spots in the region second round. The secound round consisting of four regions with eight teams each playing at a teams home site. The four finalists from the regions met at Madison Square Gardeens to determine a champion In the 2002 tournament the John Calipari coached Memphis Tigers defeated the South Carolina Gamecocks in the final game to claim the championship. Dajuan Wagner of Memphis was named the tournament MVP.
