2005 NIT Basketball Tournament

The 2005 NIT Tournament remained at a 40 team field. The opening round consisted of 16 teams playing for 8 spots in the tournament. Preliminary rounds consisting of four regions with eight teams each playing at a teams home site made up the second round. The four winners from the regions met at Madison Square Gardeens to determine a champion. South Carolina Gamecocks coached by Dave Odom defeated the Saint Joseph Hawks, 60?57, to earn the program's first NIT title. Carlos Powell of South Carolina was named the tournament MVP.
