2004 NIT Basketball Tournament

The 2004 NIT Tournament remained at a 40 team field. The opening round consisted of 16 teams playing for 8 spots in the tournament. Preliminary rounds consisting of four regions with eight teams each playing at a teams home site made up the second round. Ther four winners from the regions met at Madison Square Gardeens to determine a champion. The Michigan Wolverines coached by Tommy Amaker, defeated the Rutgers Scarlet Knights in the final game to capture their third NIT Championship. Daniel Horton of Michigan was named the tournament MVP.
