The University of Alberta Pandas faced a formidable task on Sunday. They had to play the number one seed University of Victoria Vikes in the CIAU women's basketball finals. The Vikes won it all last year and they were not about to go down without a fight.
The Pandas were going for their first ever championship and they got off to a good start, leading the Vikes 27-23 at the half.
The second half saw more of the same. The game was close throughout, but the Pandas stayed ahead and won their first championship by a final of 54-46.
The star of the game was Jackie Simon and the Pandas rode her very capable shoulders to victory. Simon lead both teams in scoring with fifteen points, as well as pulling down an impressive 17 rebounds.
The Pandas started their road to victory by beating Manitoba in the first round. They faced Laurentian in the semi-final round and escaped with a 55-48 victory to put them in the final.
The University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds captured the bronze medal with a 69-51 over the Laurentian Lady Vees. The fifth place game saw the Regina Cougars slip past the Concordia Stingers 59-52.
Jackie Simon captured the tournament MVP, thanks to her strong performance in Sunday's final. The all-tournament team included Laura Swift and Bonnie Mann from the University of New Brunswick, Janet MacLachlan and Lindsay Brooke from the University of Victoria, and Sara Armstrong from the University of Alberta. |
