April 2002: The Southwest Basketball League has formed the X-treme Basketball League (XBL) consortium, an organization established to be the governing body for independent professional basketball leagues in the United States. The XBL will work with non-NBA professional teams and leagues across the country to increase awareness and corporate sponsorship, develop inter-league play, establish international alliances, provide player development and make recommendations concerning rule changes.
