Soapbox - Buy a Sports Bobblehead - Support an Athlete Campaign

Comments on the Sporting World

Enough is enough....what is with this "bobblehead" craze in sports collectable's? It used to be that the only thing in a car was a cute puppy dog thing bobbing in the rear window. Now every dashboard has a sports figure bouncing around on it.

We were silently wishing that this fad would pass, but instead it is growing in popularity. Perhaps it is our human need for acceptance that drives us to purchase these. It's always refreshing to have your own sports star, nod in the affirmative to a question as your drive over a set of railway tracks.

Gone are the days of swapping baseball cards at the corner, replaced with the never ending hunt for bobblehead replacement springs. We thought it was bad when computer games replaced actually playing the sports. Now athletic ability is judged by what is contained in your thumb and fingers.

What happened to the days of a pickup game of baseball or hockey? Now pickup only refers to what professional athletes do after a game. Although this has happened since the days of the Garden of Eden's first basketball tournament, it was not contained on the front page of my newspaper.

There is one redeeming feature to having a "bobblehead in your car. I can smack the athlete on the side of his head without having to take my eyes off of the road. For some reason this has not resulted in any social skills actually being beaten into this group however.

So our sports hero's are being unmasked, some by their own peers, their flaws exposed to the world and we sit on our hands and watch this happen? I say no! It is time for us to go out and purchase more bobbleheads, support the athletes in their time of need (through royalty agreements) and fill the world's windshields with nodding heads.

The foregoing message is brought to you by the automotive insurers of the world.
