Womens NCAA Division I College Hockey Champions
In 1998, the first-ever national collegiate championship was played. The University of New Hampshire, the ECAC regular season champion, captured the American Women’s College Hockey Alliance (AWCHA) title with a 4-1 win over the ECAC’s Brown University. The AWCHA, formed through the USOC Grant Program and USA Hockey, sponsored the national collegiate championship from 1998 through 2000. Women’s hockey took another giant step forward in 2001 as the National Collegiate Athletic Association sponsored the inaugural NCAA Women’s Frozen Four. St. Lawrence was the runner-up, losing 4-2 to the University of Minnesota-Duluth in the title game.
