Washington Capitals Team History

The Washington Capitals were awarded a franchise in the summer of 1972 to owner Abe Pollin who won out over eleven applicants for a NHL expansion franchise. The new team played in the Capital Center in Landover, Maryland. The Caps joined the league in the 1974-75 season with hall of fame player Milt Schmidt as their first general manager and Jimmy Anderson behind the bench as the team's first coach. The franchise would break and set numerous NHL records, losing 67 games in that inaugural season and finishing with 21 points. They only managed 19 victories in their first two seasons, leading to the replacement of both general manager and coach.
