National Hockey League (NHL) Season Review 1921-1922

National Hockey League (NHL) Season Review 1921-1922

The NHL moved to a single season schedule for the 1921-22 season. The playoff format was revised from the previous split season winners playing each other, to the overall first and second place teams meeting in a playoff.

For the 1921-22 season a third professional league was formed, called the Western Canada Hockey League. The winner of the new league would challenge the champion of the PCHA to represent the west for the Stanley Cup. The Western Canada Hockey League established clubs in Calgary, Edmonton, Regina, and Saskatoon.

In the NHL George Kennedy, one of the founders of the NHL and the owner of the Montreal Canadiens died in 1921. The club was sold to Joe Cattarinich and Leo Dandurand.

In the playoffs Toronto defeated Ottawa in a two game total goals playoff 5-4. In the PCHA, Vancouver won the playoffs against Seattle with two 1-0 shutouts. The Western Canada Hockey League's Regina finished second in the league but managed to upset Edmonton in the playoffs. Challenging Vancouver for the right to represent the west, Regina was able to take the first game by a score of 2-1 but lost in the second by 4-0. In the Stanley Cup finals Vancouver and Toronto played, with Toronto winning 3 games to 2.
