National Hockey League (NHL) Season Review 1922-1923
The National Hockey League played a 24 game schedule during the 1922-23 season. The league consisted of four teams. During the off season Newsy Lalonde had been sold to Saskatoon of the WCHL without being offered to any other NHL club. Montreal received the rights to a young player named Aurel Joliat. Other trades this year included Montreal's Bert Corbeau and Edmound Bouchard going to Hamilton for Joe Malone and Vancouver made a deal that sent Jack Adams to Toronto for Corbett Denneny.
Babe Dye took the scoring crown with 26 goals 11 assists for 37 points. For the fifth year in a row Clint Benedict led the goaltenders with a 2.3 goals against average, and four shutouts in just 24 games. Ottawa won the regular season title with 14 wins 9 losses 1 tie for 29 points. Right behind Ottawa was Montreal with 13 wins 9 losses 2 ties for 28 points.
In the PCHA a big step was taken when they eliminated the seventh player or rover. This allowed the PCHA and the WCHL to play an interlocking schedule. The leagues retained separate standings and playoffs. In the PCHA Victoria's Frank Fredrickson won the scoring race with 41 goals in just 31 games.
In the playoffs Ottawa won the first game by a score of 2-0 and lost the second 2-1 to the Canadiens, winning the two game, total goal series 3-2.
Victoria lost to the Vancouver Maroons in the playoffs giving Vancouver the right to play for the Stanley Cup. In the WCHL Edmonton had eliminated Regina 4-3 in a two game total goals series.
During the series against Montreal, Ottawa had been plagued with injuries that drastically reduced their lineup. They traveled west and eliminated Vancouver in four games and then took Edmonton in two straight to capture the Cup.
