National Hockey League (NHL) Season Review 1923-1924
The National Hockey League maintained it's schedule in 1923-24 at 24 games. The league membership remained at four teams.
As the NHL started to mature, Dr. David Hart father thought that individual players should be recognized. In 1924 he donated the Hart Trophy to be awarded each year the NHL's most valuable player. Frank Nighbor a center for Ottawa was the first player to win the trophy.
This year saw Ottawa's Cy Denneny win the scoring title with 22 goals 1 assist for 23 points and Georges Vezina was the number one goalie with a 2.0 goals against average. Ottawa took the regular season title but this time they were defeated by Montreal in the playoffs.
The PCHA saw Seattle win the regular season crown. Mickey MacKay of Vancouver won the scoring race with 23 goals, and his teammate Hugh Lehman was the number one goalie with a 2.7 goals against average. In the Western league Calgary took the regular season title and Bill Cook of Saskatoon won the scoring title. Regina's goalie Red McCusker beat out the other goaltenders with a 2.2 goals against average.
Vancouver eliminated Seattle in the PCHA playoffs and Calgary beat Regina in the Western playoffs. Both teams came east to play off against Montreal. Montreal beat Vancouver in two straight by scores of 3-2 and 2-1, and then defeated Calgary 6-1 and 3-0 to capture the Cup.
