National Hockey League (NHL) Season Review 1924-1925
The NHL expanded adding two teams, the United States based Boston Bruins and the Montreal Maroons. The Bruins represented the first non Canadian team in the NHL. The regular season was also expanded from 24 games to 30 games, enabling every team to play each other 5 times in a season.
The increase in regular season games, created a labor relations problem with the players. The players of course expected to have their salaries raised for the additional games. All the franchises but Hamilton's reached agreement. The Tigers didn't complain until after they had won the regular season title with a 19-10-1 record. The Tigers went on strike saying they would not play in the NHL championship series unless each player received $200 compensation for playing the extra games. The league wouldn't budge and Frank Calder suspended each of the players on Hamilton and finned them $200 dollars.
Under a new playoff format, the first place team from the regular season would play the winner of a series between the second and third place teams. This was revised so that the second place team the Toronto St Pats played the third place team the Montreal Canadiens to determine the NHL championship. Montreal downed Toronto 3-2 in the first game and 2-0 in the second advancing to the Stanley Cup finals.
Toronto's Babe Dye was the scoring champion with 38 goals 6 assists for 44 points.Georges Vezina was the Canadiens and the leagues top goalie with a 1.9 goals against average and five shutouts. Billy Burch of the Hamilton Tigers captured the Hart Trophy for leagues' most valuable player, and Frank Nighbor won the Lady Byng Trpohy. This was a new trophy added for the 1924-25 NHL season. The Lady Byng Trophy was donated by Lady Bying, wife of Viscount Byng of Vimy, to be handed out to the player who showed the best sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct combined with performance.
In the west, the PCHA Vancouver Maroons folded, and the two remaining PCHA teams joined the Western Canada Hockey League, resulting in the disbanding of the Pacific Coast Hockey Association. Victoria Cougars finshed third in the league but defeated Calgary and Saskatoon in the playoffs to meet Montreal in the Stanley Cup finals. They beat Montreal in the first two, lost the third, and downed the Canadiens in the fourth to take the Stanley Cup. Victoria has the distinction of being the last non-NHL team to win the Stanley Cup.
