Stanley Cup 1924-25 Season
The 1924-25 Stanley Cup final was historic in that the Victoria Cougars of the WHL won the last Stanley Cup championship by a non-NHL team. They were the third west-coast franchise to capture the Cup.
In addition the NHL championship was awarded to Montreal when Hamilton refused to play over a salary dispute. Third place Montreal defeated second place Toronto to gain the championship. Victoria which had defeated Saskatoon and Calgary to reach the finals, defeated Montreal in four games to win the Cup.
National Hockey League (NHL) pages on Rauzulu's Street:
^ topWith the demise of the PCHA in 1925 the NHL played the champion of the WHL for the Stanley Cup.
Under a new NHL playoff format, the first place team from the regular season would play the winner of a two game total goal series between the second and third place teams. When Hamilton refused to play over a pay dispute, this was revised so that the second place team the Toronto St Pats played the third place team the Montreal Canadiens to determine the NHL championship. Montreal downed Toronto 3-2 in the first game and 2-0 in the second (winning 5 goals to 2) advancing to the Stanley Cup finals. The WCHL championship was also the same format, with a two game total goal series applied.
The format for the Stanley Cup was a best of 5 games, played in 1920 in Ottawa and because of warm weather at the indoor rink in Toronto for the last two games. The games were played under the NHL/WHL rules, alternating between games.^ top
