National Hockey League (NHL) Season Review 1925-1926
For the 1925-26 season the NHL continued it's expansion into the United States market. The Hamilton Tigers franchise was sold to a New York group for $75,000, moving to the new Madison Square Gardens in New York City. The team's name was changed to the New York Americans. A seventh franchise for the league was added in Pittsburgh, named the Pittsburgh Pirates. The NHL expanded it's schedule to 36 games.
Ottawa Senator's goalie Alex Connell recorded 15 shutouts and registered an unbelievable 1.2 goals against average during the season. Nels Stewart captured the scoring title and the Hart Trophy with 34 goals. Frank Nighbor won the Lady Byng Trophy for the second consecutive year.
The Senators won the regular season title, losing to the Montreal Maroons in the playoffs.The Maroons went on to handle Ottawa shutting them out in the last game 1-0.
In the west Edmonton won the WHL season title losing to Victoria in the playoffs. The Montreal Maroons would win the Cup. The 1925-26 Stanley Cup final series was the last time that a team from outside the NHL competed for Lord Stanley's Cup.
