Rauzulu's StreetNational Hockey League (NHL) Season Review 1927-28
The 1927-28 NHL season was the eleventh National Hockey League season, the schedule at 44 games. This season saw the reintroduction of the O'Brien Trophy, which used to go to the NHL league champion. It was originally retired in favor of the Prince of Wales Trophy. The re-introduced O'Brien Trophy went to the winner of the Canadian Division while the Prince of Wales Trophy went to the winner of the American division.
With ten teams the National Hockey League was slowly establishing itself as the premier professional hockey league. Salary cap restrictions on players were lifted even though some of the teams were still struggling financially.
Howie Morenz had an outstanding season for the Montreal Canadiens, leading the NHL in both goals (33) and assists (18) to win the Hart Trophy as the league's MVP.
The American Division's second-place team, the New York Rangers, beat the first-place team, the Boston Bruins, to move into the Stanley Cup finals. In the Canadian Division the Montreal Maroons defeated the season champions Montreal Canadiens. New York's home rink, Madison Square Garden, wasn't available because a circus was in town, so the entire championship series was played in Montreal. The Maroons won the first game. In the second game, Ranger goalie Lorne Chabot was injured and New York had no backup available, so 44-year-old coach Lester Patrick put himself in and made 18 saves in a 2-1 overtime victory.
After Montreal won Game 3, the Rangers won the next two to take the best-of-five series and the Stanley Cup. Thy became the first United States based team since the formation of the NHL to win the Cup and first US based team since the Seattle Metropolitans in 1917.
