Rauzulu's StreetNational Hockey League (NHL) Season Review 1928-1929
For the 1928-29 NHL season teams played a 44 schedule. An emphasis on defense had resulted in goal scoring being reduced over the previous years and in the 1928-29 season resulted in less than 1.5 goals/team in a game being scored. Only two players scored more than 20 goals, namely Ace Bailey of Toronto with 22 and Nels Stewart of the Montreal Maroons with 21. Goaltenders on the other hand were in their glory with 8 of them gaining at least 10 shutouts and Montreal Canadiens goalie George Hainsworth recording 22, with a goals against of 0.92. Hainswoth won the Venzina trophy for his remarkable performance.
The playoff format was revised slightly with the the second and third place teams playing their counterparts from the other division in a two game, total goal series. The winners would play in a best of three series for a berth in the Stanley Cup final. Meanwhile the two first place teams played each other in a best of five series for the other berth in the finals.
What resulted was Boston defeating Montreal Canadiens in the showdown of the first place clubs. The New York Rangers defeated the Americans and Toronto Maple Leafs in the elimination side of the playoffs to advance. This was the first Stanley Cup playoffs to see two United States based teams compete for the Cup. The Boston Bruins won their first Stanley Cup by defeating the New York Rangers two games to none, in the best-of-three final.
