National Hockey League (NHL) Season Review 1930-31

National Hockey League (NHL) Season Review 1930-31

For the 1930-31 season the National Hockey League remained with a 44 game schedule. The Great Depression was starting to take it's toll on the National Hockey League. The Pittsburgh Pirates moved to Philadelphia and were renamed the Quakers. The financially troubled Ottawa Senators sold several players.

The Boston Bruins again won the American Division while the Montreal Canadiens led by Hart Trophy winner Howie Morenz won the Canadian Division.

The Canadiens beat the Bruins in their playoff series, while the Chicago Black Hawks beat Toronto and the New York Rangers to get into the Stanley Cup finals for the first time. The championship series was expanded from best-of-three to a best-of-five game series. The Canadiens took the Stanley Cup finals 3 games to 2, to retain the Cup.
