National Hockey League (NHL) Season Review 1932-1933
For the 1932-33 season the nine team NHL played a 48 game schedule. The Ottawa Senators rejoined the NHL after having sat out the previous season. The Detroit Falcons were purchased by James Norris and renamed the Red Wings. During the offseason the NHL Board of Goveners set a payroll limit of $70,000 per team.
The defending Stanley Cup champion Toronto Maple Leafs edged the Montreal Maroons by 4 points to win the Canadian Division. In the American Division, the Boston Bruins and Detroit Red Wings tied for first place with Boston awarded the championship based on the head-to-head record. The New York Rangers were only 4 points back of the leaders.
Eddie Shore of the Boston Bruins won the Hart Trophy while his teammate Tiny Thompson won the Vezina. A new trophy for the rookie of the year was introduced with Carl Voss of Detroit being awarded a Calder Trophy.
Toronto edged the Bruins in the series between first-place teams. The fifth and final game went six overtimes, with the Maple Leafs finally pulling out a 1-0 victory on Ken Doray's goal at 4:46 of the sixth OT (104:46). The Rangers, who had beat the Canadiens and Red Wings to get into the final series, defeated Toronto in four games to claim the Cup.
