National Hockey League (NHL) Season Review 1933-1934

National Hockey League (NHL) Season Review 1933-1934

The 1933-34 season was again played as a 48 game schedule. Although some of the franchises were struggling with attendance and revenues, nine team competed during the season.

On Feb. 14, 1934, the first NHL All-Star game was played, brought on by tragic circumstances. It was a benifit game for Ace Bailey who had suffered a fractured skull after being hit by Boston's Eddie Shore. Bailey survived, but his career hockey was over. Shore was suspended for 16 games because of the incident. The game hosted by Toronto seen Leafs play an all star squad from the leagues other teams. Toronto won 7-3. Ace Bailey's jersey (#6) was the first to be retired in the NHL.

The Chicago Black Hawks back stopped by netminder Charlie Gardiner, who had won the Vezina Trophy for the second time, beat the Detroit Red Wings in the Stanley Cup finals. The 29 year old Gardiner, died of a brain tumor two months later.
