National Hockey League (NHL) Season Review 1936-1937

National Hockey League (NHL) Season Review 1936-1937

For the 1936-37 season the NHL again played a 48 game schedule with 8 teams. Off the ice an agreement that would change the face of hockey for years to come had the Montreal Canadiens having first rights to all French Canadian hockey players in all of Canada. The New York Americans franchise which had been in financial trouble for a number of years was taken over by the NHL Board of Goveners, who operated the team for the season.

The hockey world mourned the loss of Montreal Canadiens Howie Morenz. On January 28, 1937, he had suffered a severe leg fracture during a game at the Montreal Forum and six weeks later died of a pulmonary embolism in the hospital.

The Montreal Canadiens won the Canadian Division and faced the Detroit Red Wings who had won the American Division. The Red Wings eliminated Montreal 3 games to 2. The New York Rangers defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs and Montreal Maroons to face Detroitin the finals. Detroit defeated the Rangers 3 games to 2 to win their second Stanley Cup in as many years.
