National Hockey League (NHL) Season Review 1947-1948
The NHL had played two previous All-Star games as benefits, for Ace Bailey in 1934 and for Howie Morenz's family in 1937. Starting in 1947 the All-Star game became an annual event played as a pre-season game by the defending Stanley Cup champions against a team of all-stars from the other five NHL teams.
The Maple Leafs won the regular season after a major trade sent five players to the Chicago Black Hawks for center Max Bentley and rookie winger Cy Thomas.
Toronto defeated the Boston Bruins in a five-game semifinal, while Detroit defeated New York in six games. Toronto swept Detroit in the Stanley Cup finals.
