National Hockey League (NHL) Season Review 1957-1958

National Hockey League (NHL) Season Review 1957-1958

The Montreal Canadiens were the NHL's dominant team, scoring a record 250 goals and finishing in first place by 19 points over the surprising New York Rangers, while the Red Wings finished in third place and the Boston Bruins finished fourth.

Dickie Moore of Montreal led the league in goals and scoring, Henri Richard led in assists, Jacques Plantewon the Vezina Trophy for the third year in a row, and Doug Harvey won his fourth straight Norris Trophy as the league's best defenseman.

Doug Harvey and Ted Lindsay tried to get a players association going, and sued the NHL over the issue of player pensions. After the NHL declined to negotiate with the players over benefits and would not open the books on the pension plan, the player's association filed an anti-trust lawsuit. The lawsuit alleged the monopolization of the professional hockey industry since 1926. In an out-of-court settlement on February 5, 1958, the NHL promised a $7000 minimum wage, an increase in pension benefits, increased hospitalization benefits, a limit on the number of exhibition games and that the player shall be the sole judge of his physical fitness to play after injury.

As they had the previous year, the Bruins pulled an upset in the semifinals, beating the Rangers in a six-game semifinal, and the Canadiens swept the Red Wings.

The teams split the first four games of the Stanley Cup Finals, but Rocket Richard won Game 5 with his sixth career playoff overtime goal and Bernie Geoffrion scored twice in a 5-3 win that gave the Canadiens their third straight championship.
