National Hockey League (NHL) Season Review 1958-1959
The Montreal Canadiens continued their domination during the regular season, finishing first by an 18-point margin over the Boston Bruins, who were 4 points ahead of the Chicago Blackhawks. The Toronto Maple Leafs returned to the playoffs with a remarkable finish. They were 7 points behind the New York Rangers with only five games to play, but they won all five while the Rangers were losing six out of seven.
Jacques Plante won his fourth straight Vezina Trophy. Montreal's Tom Johnson won the James Norris Memorial Trophy and Dickie Moore won the Art Ross Trophy, setting a new record for total points in a season: with a 41-goal, 55-assist campaign.
The Maple Leafs in the playoffs beat the Bruins in a seven-game series, including two overtime wins by Toronto. Meanwhile Montreal defeated Chicago in six games. In the final series Montreal defeated Toronto to claim the Stanley Cup, The Canadiens became the first NHL team to win the Stanley Cup four years in a row.
