National Hockey League (NHL) Season Review 1959-1960

National Hockey League (NHL) Season Review 1959-1960

The Montreal Canadiens won the the regular season over second-place Toronto, third place Chicago and fourth place Detroit.

Bobby Hull of Chicago led the league in scoring and tied with Bronco Horvath of the Boston Bruins for the leadership in goals. Montreal's Jacques Plante won the Vezina Trophy for the fourth year in a row. The year was marked by important changes in the NHL. Montreal Canadiens goaltender Jacques Plante, began to wear a mask in hockey games. Plante began wearing a mask in practice shortly after a sinus operation in 1957. His first appearance with a mask in a game was on November 1, 1959, against the New York Rangers. Although many in the NHL disapproved of Plante's decision, due to traditions of the NHL at the time, many followed suit after Plante went undefeated in ten games with the mask on.

In the semifinal series, Montreal beat Chicago in a four-game sweep. Toronto beat Detroit in six games. In the final series the Canadiens outscored the Maple Leafs, 15-5, in another four-game sweep for their fifth straight Stanley Cup championship.
