National Hockey League (NHL) Season Review 1960-1961
On September 15, the NHL lost one of its greatest stars when Rocket Richard announced his retirement. During his career, he had lead all scorers with a record 544 goals plus 82 goals in the playoffs. Richard had scored 50 goals in 1944-45 and no one else had done it since, even though the season had expanded from 50 games to 70. Suddenly, it looked as if Frank Mahovlich of Toronto and Bernie "Boom Boom" Geoffrion of Montreal might each score 50 goals in a season.
Mahovlich went into a late-season slump finishing at 48 goals, but Geoffrion did score 50goals. He added 45 assists to lead the league in scoring.. Geoffrion won the Hart Trophy as the NHL's most valuable player.
Montreal won the regular season with Toronto finishing second ahead of Chicago and Detroit. In the semifinals, the Red Wings beat the Maple Leafs and the Blackhawks eliminated the Canadiens.
In the finals the teams split the first four games, but Chicago won the next two easily, 6-3 and 5-1, to take the Stanley Cup for the first time since 1938.
