National Hockey League (NHL) Season Review 1963-1964
The Montreal Canadiens won the regular season over Chicago by a single point. The Toronto Maple Leafs were third with the Detroit Red Wings fourth.
In the Stanley Cup semi-finals Toronto eliminated the Canadiens and the Red Wings beat the Blackhawks both in seven games. The Maple Leafs won the seven game series to claim their third straight Stanley Cup.
During the season Gordie Howe scored his 545th goal to pass Rocket Richard for the all time career goal lead and Terry Sawchuk recorded his 95th shutout to break the record formerly held by George Hainsworth.
The season also featured two of the biggest trades in NHL history. The first came shortly before the season opened, when the Montreal Canadiens traded three players, including goalie Jacques Plante, to the New York Rangers for Dave Balon, Leon Rochefort, Len Ronson, and Gump Worsley. The Toronto Maple Leafs sent five players to the New York Rangers for Andy Bathgate and Don McKenney.
