National Hockey League (NHL) Season Review 1965-1966

National Hockey League (NHL) Season Review 1965-1966

Bobby Hull set a new record for goals in a season with 54 and a new record for points in a season with 97, earning him the Art Ross Trophy and his second straight Hart Trophy as the league's most valuable player. Gordie Howe scored his 600th NHL goal in Montreal November 27th in a 3-2 loss to the Canadiens to the cheers of the local fans. Among lesser milestones in the season were Frank Mahovlich's 250th goal and John Bucyk's and Claude Provost's 200th.

Defenseman Marcel Pronovost went to Toronto and center Andy Bathgate to Detroit in an eight-player trade before the season opened. The Montreal Canadiens won the seaon play with the Chicago Black Hawks second. The Maple Leafs ended up in third place with the Red Wings in fourth.

In the playoffs the Red Wings eliminated the Blackhawks in a six-game semifinal series, while Montreal won in six games over Toronto.

Detroit was defeated by Montreal 4 games to 2 in the Stanley Cup final series.
