National Hockey League (NHL) Season Review 1970-1971
Another expansion for the league with the addition of the Buffalo Sabres and Vancouver Canucks. Both were added to the East Division and the Chicago Blackhawks moved into the West Division. The regular season was extended to 78 games. The playoff format was revised so that after the first round, there was interdivisional competition.
The Boston Bruins led by Phil Esposito and Bobby Orr scored a record 399 goals and set records with 57 victories and 121 points. Esposito had 76 goals and 152 points while Orr had a record 102 assists.
In the playoffs the Montreal Canadiens used a rookie goaltender Ken Dryden in a seven-game win over the Bruins in the first round. The Canadiens eliminated the Minnesota North Stars in six games. The Chicago Blackhawks swept Philadelphia in the first round and defeated the New York Rangers in seven games.
Led by Conn Smythe Trophy winner Dryden as the MVP of the playoffs, Montreal defeated Chicago in a seven game series.
