Professional Hockey Leagues - United Hockey League (UHL)
The UHL was created in 1991 as the Colonial Hockey League. The original plan for the CoHL was to place teams in the northeastern U.S. and eastern Canada. While a few franchises were placed in Canada, the core of the league eventually developed in Michigan, comprising markets abandoned by the IHL during the 1980's. The league changed its name in 1997 and more recently has expanded in three directions. The UHL has continued market strategy with nine of fifteen teams in markets previously occupied by other AAA and AA leagues.
