The Indy Racing League (IRL) is the governing body for the Indy Car Series and also the Indy Pro Series, which is a developmental series for the IRL.
The IRL was founded in 1994 began racing in 1996. CART had sanctioned Indy car racing since 1979, when that organization broke away from USAC. The IRL which also owns the rights to the Indianapolis 500 race struggled in the early seasons with unknown drivers and teams. Eventually the schedule expanded, and caliber of drivers improved. The IRL began to draw teams from CART starting in 2000, contributing to the latter's bankruptcy and rebranding as Champ Car in 2003. For the 2008 season, Champ Car and the IRL merged under the IRL name.
