A. J. Foyt won his
first IROC title without winning a race, as for the first time the series
champion was determined by total points in the four events. Foyt finished
third in Race 1, as he edged past Benny Parsons at the finish line.
Bobby Allison and David Pearson had battled for the lead most of the
race until Pearson made a pass in turn three on the final lap to take
the win. In Race 2 Foyt charged from 10th on the grid to finish second
behind Bobby Unser, who had missed the first race because of a broken
kneecap. Emerson Fittipaldi moved from eighth to third but spun on the
last lap and dropped to fourth behind Mario Andretti. In Race 3 Foyt
won a furious battle with Andretti and Bobby Unser for third, as Bobby
Allison comfortably led most of the race. Al Unser, in second place,
moved up to Allison's bumper at the finish line with Foyt right alongside.
Race 4 was a dramatic slingshot battle on the banked Daytona oval with
24 official lead changes at the finish line and at least another 30
changes at other parts of the track. Eight of the nine finalists swapped
positions throughout the race. Parsons held on to win with Foyt finishing
second. (from IROC Website)
