NASCAR - Nationwide Series (Formerly Busch Series Grand National Division)
This series is the minor leagues for the Nextel Cup Series. Here drivers hone their skill levels before joining the premier series. The likes of Dale Earnhardt Jr, Kevin Harvick, and Matt Kensith are examples of this. The NASCAR Busch Grand National Series features cars weighing somewhat less than their Winston Cup counterparts. Busch Series cars produce about 200 less horsepower than Nextel Cup cars, thus they are noticeably slower.
1950 is when Bill France Sr. inaugurated the NASCAR Short Track Division for tracks smaller than a half-mile to host NASCAR cars. Separate point standings and an additional point fund were set for the new Sportsman Division.
In 1968 the division name changed to NASCAR Late Model Sportsman. The division underwent a transition in 1982 - Anheuser-Busch stepped up to back what was called the NASCAR Budweiser Late Model Sportsman Series in a 29 race schedule its inaugural season.
In 1984 Anheuser-Busch switched its sponsorship from its Budweiser brand to its Busch brand. At the same time the Nextel Cup Series dropped 'Grand National' from its title. The NASCAR Busch Series, Grand National Division began in 1984. Many drivers love racing in this series and have made a career out of it, say it has the same intense competition as the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series. For the 2008 season Nationwide Insurance became the series sponsor and the name was changed to the Nationwide Series.
