Football Awards - Most Valuable Player

Football Awards - Most Valuable Player

The NFL/Miller Lite Player of the Year was introduced in 1997 as the official, league-sanctioned MVP award. The NFL awarded the Joe F. Carr Trophy (named for the league president - 1921-39) to the league MVP from 1938 to 1946. This section also includes some MVP's frpm the old AAFC and AFL, for your reference.

To make it confusing, many other groups also recognize the NFL's Most Valuable Player including, the UP (1953-69), the AP (since 1957), the Maxwell Club of Philadelphia's Bert Maxwell Trophy (since 1959) and the Pro Football Writers Association (since 1976).

For some of the older records the following lengend should be used. NFL = National Football League, AAFC = All American Football Conference, AFL=American Football League. In the awards area AP is Associated Press, Maxwell is the Maxwell Club of Philadelphia, PFWA is the Professional Football Writers Association, and UP is United Press.
