ECHL (Formerly East Coast Hockey League)
The ECHL (Formerly East Coast Hockey League) is a professional ice hockey league based in Canada and the United States. It serves as a primary developmental circuit for the National Hockey League (NHL).
The American Hockey League was originated in 1936 as a result of a merger between the Canadian-American Hockey League and the International Hockey League. This merger had occured initially in 1936 with the two leagues playing an interlocking schedule, and had merged officially in 1938. Originally known as the International-American Hockey League the name was revised to the ECHL (Formerly East Coast Hockey League) for the 1940-41 season.
The annual playoff champion is awarded the Calder Cup
